Monstrum Society Lecture: Jean Rollin’s Female Transgressors and Gothic Subversion

As part of Monstrum Society’s autumn 2021 ‘Gothic Excursions, Disrupted Histories’ series, I will be delivering an online lecture on how Jean Rollin’s virgins and vampires, under the influence of Georges Bataille, revitalised the subversive potential of the Gothic heroine in the 1970s.

Lecture available from Monday 18th October on the Monstrum Society website. Other lectures in the series include ‘Ken Russell’s Gothic: Tone, Mode and the Limits of Art-Horror’ by Joan Hawkins, ‘Race and the Gothic Past in Jewell Gomez’s The Gilda Stories and Tananarive Due’s My Soul to Keep‘ by Dara Downey, ‘Painting with Light in Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark: Vampires, Chiaroscuro, and a New Type of Gothic’ by Stacey Abbott, and ‘Resurrecting the Hero: Disrupted Histories, Ghostly Returns, and Gothic Transformations in MCU’s Captain America’ by Lorna Piatti-Farnell.
